Classification and Functions of Road Marking Glass Beads

Release time: 2020-03-25

Summary: The glass beads used for road markings are tiny glass spheres formed by melting glass sand at high temperatures. Under microscopic examination, these glass beads appear as colorless, crystal-clear spheres with no visible air bubbles or impurities. The refractive index of the glass beads used in road markings ranges between 1.50 and 1.65, and their particle size typically falls between 70 microns and 800 microns; hence, they are also referred to as road-reflective glass beads. Currently, the two main manufacturing processes for road-marking glass beads in China are the flame-floating method and the electric-furnace melting method.

II. Classification and Usage

Road marking glass beads can be categorized into two types—surface-applied glass beads and pre-mixed glass beads—depending on the specific application conditions. Surface-applied glass beads are sprinkled onto the surface of wet road-marking paint after the paint has been applied to the road. Pre-mixed glass beads, on the other hand, are uniformly blended into the road-marking paint before it is applied to the road. Road marking glass beads are primarily used in both cold-applied and thermoplastic road-marking paints. Pre-mixed glass beads ensure long-term reflectivity throughout their service life, while surface-applied glass beads provide immediate reflective effects.

III. Function

Road marking glass beads, as reflective materials used in road markings, significantly enhance the reflectivity of pavement marking paints, thereby improving nighttime driving safety. They have already been officially recognized by transportation authorities worldwide. When a vehicle is driven at night, headlights shining on road markings embedded with glass microbeads can cause the light to be reflected back in a parallel manner, enabling drivers to clearly see the road ahead and thus enhancing nighttime driving safety. Currently, reflective glass beads have become an indispensable reflective material in road safety products.
