Sandblasting glass beads

Category: Sandblasting glass beads

Sandblasting is a process that uses compressed air as the power source to generate a high-speed jet stream, which propels abrasive materials—such as copper ore sand, quartz sand, garnet sand, iron sand, and sea sand—at high velocity onto the surface of the workpiece to be treated, thereby altering the surface appearance or geometry of the workpiece. Due to the impact and cutting action of the abrasive particles on the workpiece surface, the surface achieves a certain degree of cleanliness and varying degrees of roughness, improving its mechanical properties. As a result, the workpiece exhibits enhanced fatigue resistance, increased adhesion between the workpiece and any applied coatings, prolonged durability of the coating film, and better flow and aesthetic appeal of the coating itself.

Detailed introduction

Surface treatments for workpieces often employ shot peening and sandblasting.

Shot peening, also known as shot blasting, is an effective method for reducing part fatigue and extending service life. In shot peening, a high-velocity stream of small spherical media is projected onto the surface of a part, inducing plastic deformation in the surface layer and forming a hardened layer of a certain thickness. This hardened layer develops significant residual stresses. The presence of compressive stresses on the part’s surface helps counteract some of the applied loads, thereby enhancing the part’s fatigue strength. Shot peening can be used to improve not only the mechanical strength of parts but also their wear resistance, fatigue resistance, and corrosion resistance. Additionally, it can be employed for surface dulling, removal of oxide scales, and elimination of residual stresses in castings, forgings, and welded components.

Due to the impact and cutting action of the abrasive particles on the workpiece surface, the surface achieves a certain degree of cleanliness and varying roughness levels, improving its mechanical properties. As a result, the workpiece exhibits enhanced fatigue resistance, increased adhesion between the workpiece and any applied coatings, and prolonged durability of the coating film. Additionally, sandblasting facilitates smoother flow and better decorative effects of the coating.

Application areas

Due to their remarkable strength, hardness, chemical stability, perfect dimensional accuracy, and clean surface, glass beads maintain the mechanical precision of machined parts and do not contaminate them. As a result, glass beads are used as blasting media in applications such as cleaning, deburring, surface finishing, finishing operations, and strengthening.
