Reflective glass beads are the core material for producing new types of optically functional composite materials, such as reflective fabrics, reflective films, and reflective coatings. They possess retroreflective properties, which generate a strong retroreflection effect without the need for an external power source. As a result, they can be widely used in fields including roads, ports, mines, fire protection, and traffic safety, serving as safety signs that significantly enhance people’s safety and reliability.

Road-reflective glass beads are tiny spherical glass particles formed by melting glass sand (waste glass) at high temperatures. Under a microscope, they appear spherical, colorless, and transparent, with a refractive index ranging from 1.50 to 1.64 and diameters typically between 75 micrometers and 1,400 micrometers. Hence, they are also referred to as reflective glass beads. Currently, the two main production processes for road-reflective glass beads in China are the flame floating method and the electric heating melting method.

China’s highway infrastructure is highly modern, but its urban roads and road signs could use improvement. Dean Scobell, President and CEO of the U.S. company Avery Dennison, noted that China is undertaking large-scale expansion of its nationwide highway network, which has significantly alleviated traffic pressure and congestion. However, on the other hand, China’s highways still have considerable shortcomings in terms of road markings and signage, leading to frequent traffic accidents. As a result, the role of high-quality reflective products is becoming increasingly evident.

Taiwan’s textile industry has developed functional fabrics that are now being widely used in fashion apparel.
With the acceleration of highway and transportation infrastructure development in China over the coming years and even decades, the gradual implementation of urbanization and town development strategies, the successful hosting of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, the further expansion of China’s openness, the ever-growing size of the tourism industry’s “pie,” and people’s fashionable pursuit of a colorful lifestyle, the outlook for reflective materials in both the Chinese and global markets is exceptionally promising.
